Springfield History
Long before Springfield was found by James Demint in 1801, it was Native American land with Peckuwe and Kispoko divisions of the Shawnee Tribe living nearby up until the Battle of Piqua on August 8th, 1780. There is a traditional cedar pole placed in commemoration by the Piqua Sept of Ohio Shawnee located in the George Rogers Clark Historical Park, in front of the Hertzler House.
